High-Quality Coil Heater Manufacturer
A Simple Guide to Buying Coil Heaters
Coil heaters are compact, high-performance heating elements designed to provide exceptional heat in small spaces. They are commonly used in industrial processes like plastics manufacturing (hot runner nozzles), packaging, and scientific equipment.
Here’s what you need to consider when buying one.
1. What Are You Heating? (The Application)
First, understand the physical object you need to heat. Coil heaters are typically wrapped around a cylindrical nozzle or part. The most important measurements are:
Inside Diameter (ID): The heater must fit snugly around the part. A loose fit results in poor heat transfer and can cause the heater to burn out prematurely. Measure the outside diameter of your part accurately.
Heated Length: How much of the part needs to be heated? The length of the coiled section should match this requirement.
2. Key Specifications to Choose
Once you know the dimensions, you need to select the right electrical and material properties.
A. Voltage and Wattage
Voltage (V): This is determined by your power source. Common industrial voltages are 120V, 240V, or 480V. This must match your equipment.
Wattage (W): This is the heater’s power output. Higher wattage means more heat, but it’s not always better. The key concept is Watt Density (watts per square inch or W/cm2).
Low to Medium Watt Density: Good for general-purpose heating. Lasts longer.
High Watt Density: Heats up very quickly but requires precise temperature control to avoid overheating and burnout.
Recommendation: If you don’t have a specific wattage requirement, consult your equipment’s manual or the heater manufacturer. Providing them with your application details is the best way to get the right wattage.
B. Sheath Material
The outer metal tube of the heater is called the sheath. The material determines its maximum operating temperature and resistance to corrosion.
Stainless Steel (e.g., 304, 316): The standard choice. Excellent for most applications up to about 650∘C (1200∘F). Good corrosion resistance.
Incoloy® / Inconel® (e.g., 800, 600): A superior nickel-chromium alloy. Use this for very high temperatures (above 650∘C) or in corrosive environments. It is more expensive but necessary for demanding applications.
C. Built-in Thermocouple
A thermocouple is a sensor that measures temperature. For precise temperature control, you need a heater with an integrated thermocouple.
Why you need it: A thermocouple sends feedback to a temperature controller, which then cycles the heater on and off to maintain a set temperature. Without it, the heater would just stay on, likely overheating and damaging the part or itself.
Common Types:
Type J: Very common for general-purpose applications up to 750∘C.
Type K: Used for higher temperature applications.
Recommendation: Almost always buy a heater with a built-in thermocouple. Choose the type that is compatible with your temperature controller.
D. Lead Wires and Termination Style
This is how the heater connects to your power source. Consider the space and environment where it will be installed.
Lead Wire Length: Ensure the wires are long enough to reach the power connection without stretching.
Protection:
Fiberglass Sleeve: Standard, flexible insulation.
Braided Metal Sleeve: Offers good protection against abrasion and pinching.
Flexible Armored Cable (Conduit): Provides the best protection against physical damage and contaminants.
Exit Style:
Straight Exit: Wires come straight out from the end.
Right-Angle Exit: Wires exit at a 90-degree angle, useful for tight spaces.
Buying Checklist: Before You Order
Have the answers to these questions ready to ensure you get the right part:
Inside Diameter (ID): What is the diameter of the part I’m heating?
Heated Length: What length do I need to heat?
Voltage: What is my power supply voltage? (e.g., 240V)
Wattage: What is the required power? (If unsure, ask the supplier.)
Sheath Material: Is Stainless Steel okay, or do I need Incoloy® for high heat?
Thermocouple: Do I need one? (Almost always yes). Is it Type J or Type K?
Lead Wires: How long do they need to be, and what level of protection (sleeve, braid, armor) is required?
Lead Exit Style: Straight or right-angle?
By considering these key factors, you can confidently select a coil heater that will perform effectively and reliably in your application. When in doubt, always contact the supplier with the details of your project.
